Sequence of Phonological Awareness Skills
Although the phonological and phonemic awareness abilities have been sequenced, as shown in "Phonological Awareness Skills List," on this web site, the targeted skills can be sequenced differently. The skills can be aligned to match what is being taught in the language arts curriculum for whole class presentation and practice, and per the reading strategies being implemented at your school. The skills can be presented to a small group when there is a specific skill that needs to be practiced by a smaller group of children. The phonemic awareness activities can be practiced by one child who needs more practice time and more opportunities to acquire a specific skill.
The scope and sequence of a particular school system, as well as benchmarks for skill acquisition should be taken into account when targeting phonological awareness skills.
Most importantly, the specific phonological awareness needs of the individual child should be taken into account when targeting phonological awareness skills.
